Wymondham to London: 2h14, and no direct train

Wymondham has a station on a main line, a fast road to Norwich and a London commute that most people here do not actually make. • Last train back from London: the 21:48 from King’s Cross reaches Wymondham at 23:57. From Liverpool Street the last useful departure is 20:30, arriving 22:52.

If you are planning an evening in London, work backwards from the 21:48 out of King’s Cross. Both routes depend on a single connecting service, so a delay at Cambridge or Norwich strands you rather than costing you twenty minutes.

The commute nobody talks about: Norwich

For most people in Wymondham the useful railway is not the London one. Norwich is 13 minutes away, and the trains run at least hourly through the day: 08:12, 08:59, 09:26, 10:28, 11:30 on a normal weekday morning.

Diss is the next main town south of Wymondham, and it sits on the Great Eastern Main Line rather than the Breckland line. That single fact changes the commute completely.

The fastest morning train from Diss reaches Liverpool Street at 09:39, having left at 08:17: 1 hour 22 minutes, no change. The annual season is £9,976, which is £756 less than the any-route equivalent from Wymondham. For anyone commuting three or more days a week to central London, the drive south saves 52 minutes each way and costs less in fares.

The counter-argument is parking at either end. Wymondham station has 17 spaces in total, including two accessible ones, with no charge listed, which is a car park for a village halt rather than a commuter station. Check what is available at Diss before you commit to driving there every morning.

The station itself

Wymondham station is managed by Greater Anglia. It has ticket machines rather than a staffed ticket office with published hours, help points, and bicycle storage. Step-free access is category B3, which means some step-free access to platforms but possibly in one direction only, and there are no lifts: the platforms sit above the main entrance level and the footbridge is the only crossing.

The 17-space car park is the constraint most people run into. If you are driving to a train from Wymondham and the car park is full, the practical alternatives are the town’s four council car parks, which are a walk away, or Thickthorn Park and Ride for Norwich rather than London.
