Wymondham's lights go on at the Market Cross at 4pm on Thursday 26 November 2026, split from Wynterfest. The road closure has not been advertised yet.

Wymondham’s Christmas lights are due to be switched on at 4pm on Thursday 26 November 2026, and for the first time in years the switch-on is a separate event from Wynterfest rather than part of it.

The change is deliberate. Writing on 5 September 2026, Tracy Kenny, chair of the organising group Together For Wymondham, said the lights are going on ten days before the festival “so that visitors and residents can enjoy the light display in the town for longer”. The switch-on itself, she wrote, “will be a smaller, after-school family event, with hot chocolate, mulled wine, and a few treats available on the market cross”.

The quick answer

  • Thursday 26 November 2026, 4pm to 6pm, in the town centre around the Market Cross.
  • Free. No ticket has been mentioned by anyone.
  • Deliberately separate from Wynterfest, which is on Sunday 6 December.
  • Hot chocolate, mulled wine and treats at the Market Cross; food outlets in the town are expected to open.
  • The road closure is not confirmed. No order for Wymondham had been advertised by Norfolk County Council on 5 September.
  • Car park charges run to 6pm on a Thursday, so most of the event sits inside the paid window.

What has actually been announced

Two organisers have published on this, and they agree on the date.

Together For Wymondham, the alliance of businesses, not-for-profit groups and the town council that is running this year’s festival, gave the date and the 4pm start in Tracy Kenny’s 5 September article in Wymondham Magazine.

Wymondham Lions set out the same plan a month earlier. In his 2 August account of the club’s Christmas schedule, John Wilde wrote: “The present plan is to have a Town Christmas Lights Switch-On on Thursday 26th, 4-6pm. It is hoped that all of the town’s food outlets will be open to provide their famed fayre.”

That is where the 4pm to 6pm window comes from. It is also where the honest caveats come from, because Wilde was explicit about what still had to happen: “Various hurdles need to be jumped for this. We first need a team of volunteers to put the lights up, as well as a short road closure to be organised.”

What is still missing

The road closure. Norfolk County Council advertises event closures on its events temporary traffic orders page. On 5 September that page listed nothing at all for Wymondham. It did already carry Sheringham’s Community Christmas Lights Switch On order for 27 November, so the county is publishing this autumn’s festive orders; ours has not appeared. Until it does, no one can tell you which streets shut or when.

The programme. Beyond hot chocolate, mulled wine and treats at the Market Cross, nothing has been published: no countdown time, no music, no guest to press the button.

Volunteers. The lights still have to go up. Wymondham has historically used a volunteer hanging day for that, and the Lions were asking for help in August.

Parking, and the thing to watch

The event window is the awkward one. South Norfolk’s four Wymondham car parks charge 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, so a Thursday event running 4pm to 6pm is almost entirely inside the paid period. The first hour is free in all four, which covers a short visit, and after 6pm they are free.

Market Street, at 57 spaces plus eight electric vehicle bays, is the closest to the Market Cross. Back Lane has 51 spaces. Town Green and Cemetery Lane are the long stay pair. One thing worth watching: South Norfolk has run a Christmas parking offer in several past years, an extra free hour on Saturdays plus free parking after 4pm from 1 December. It ran in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Nothing has been announced for 2026, and note that even if it returns on the same terms it would start after the 26 November switch-on. The rest of the Lions’ Christmas

The Lions published dates for the whole of December, and several are worth putting in a diary now:

  • Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November: bucket collection at Waitrose, raising money for Christmas presents for residents of the town’s care homes.
  • Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November: two Santa’s grottoes at the Heritage Museum.
  • Sunday 6 December: Santa returns for Wynterfest, with the grotto hosted by Money Properties.
  • Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 December: Santa and the South Norfolk Community Choir tour the town’s care homes.
  • Saturday 12 December: Santa at Wymondham Garden Centre’s grotto.
  • Friday 22 January 2027: the Lions’ Burns Supper and Ceilidh at Central Hall.

How this compares with the last two years

The switch-on has moved a long way in three years, which is worth knowing if you are working from memory:

  • 2024: Sunday 1 December, 3pm to 6.30pm, hosted by BBC Radio Norfolk’s Kayleigh Poacher, with Santa’s sleigh arriving at 2.45pm and a grotto at Money Properties on the Market Place.
  • 2025: Sunday 7 December, 12pm to 5pm, badged “A Very Wymondham Christmas”, lights on at 3.30pm.
  • 2026: Thursday 26 November, 4pm to 6pm, on its own, with the festival ten days later.

If you find an old page telling you the lights go on at a Sunday afternoon festival, it is describing a different arrangement from this year’s.
