Mulbarton beat Woodford Town 2-0 in Tuesday's FA Cup replay and host Gloucester City at 3pm on Saturday. The winners take £5,625 from the prize fund.
Mulbarton Wanderers won their FA Cup replay against Woodford Town 2-0 on Tuesday night. It settles a tie the Football Association had ordered to be played again after a referee’s error.
The win puts the village club into the third qualifying round for a home tie against Gloucester City. It kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 3 October at the Abode Arena, Mulberry Park. Mulbarton is about five miles east of Wymondham.
The score is from the FA’s own qualifying round results. The FA’s record lists the 29 September replay and notes that the original 19 September match was “ordered to be replayed”.
How Mulbarton got here
Mulbarton won the first game 2-1 at Woodford on 19 September. Woodford protested about a penalty decision in the 30th minute. The FA ruled that the referee had made a technical error and ordered a full replay. Our earlier report sets out what went wrong and how the FA reached its decision.
The FA’s records show Mulbarton’s run so far:
| Round | Date | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Extra preliminary | 8 August | Mulbarton 6-0 Lakenheath |
| Preliminary | 22 August | Mulbarton 1-0 Little Oakley |
| First qualifying | 5 September | Mulbarton 3-0 Cornard United |
| Second qualifying replay | 29 September | Woodford Town 0-2 Mulbarton |
In the four ties that stand, Mulbarton have scored 12 goals and conceded none. The FA’s list gives Woodford as the home side for the replay because it keeps the original tie’s billing. The match was played at Mulbarton, as Woodford’s own fixture list records it as an away game.
Who Gloucester City are
Gloucester City play at the KMM Energy Stadium on Sudmeadow Road, Gloucester. That is about 155 miles from Mulbarton as the crow flies.
They have needed three games to get this far, according to the FA:
- a 1-1 home draw with Mangotsfield United on 5 September
- a 4-0 win in the replay at Mangotsfield on 8 September
- a 2-0 win at AFC Totton on 19 September
What is at stake
The FA says the winners of each third qualifying round tie receive £5,625 from the prize fund. The losers receive £1,875.
The fourth qualifying round is on Saturday 17 October, according to the FA’s round dates. The first round proper follows on 7 November.
This is Mulbarton’s first season in the Isthmian League North. The club won the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division last season.
