Kett's Park in Wymondham will get soft play, a bigger café and a new community room, with work due from January 2027. A second 3G pitch is planned next.
Kett’s Park in Wymondham will get an indoor soft play centre, a bigger café and a new community room. South Norfolk Council’s planning committee approved the first phase of the project unanimously on 23 September.
Building work is due to start in January 2027 and finish by mid-summer 2027, according to the project page run by South Norfolk Leisure. That page puts the estimated cost of the whole project at £4.5m. The council is contributing over £3m of it.
What has been approved
The plans are application 2026/1627 for the Community and Recreation Centre on Harts Farm Road. The council is the applicant, so the decision went to committee.
The officers’ report sets out the changes:
- a café extension of about 25 square metres on the north side
- a multi-purpose studio and community room of about 80 square metres on the south side
- the existing hall converted into a dedicated soft play facility
- improvements to the café, kitchen, office and accessible facilities
South Norfolk Leisure’s page adds a hard-standing path across the site, linking to the existing paths.
No objections
Nobody objected. The report records these responses:
- Wymondham Town Council recommended approval.
- Norfolk County Council, as highway authority, raised no objection.
- Norwich International Airport raised no objection.
- The council’s environmental quality team had no objection once it had more detail on lighting.
- Members of the public: none.
No extra parking is planned in this phase. The report says about 140 to 150 spaces are already available on the site.
The committee minutes list 14 conditions. They include limits on external lighting and on noise from fixed plant, and a plan to manage habitat on the site.
Wymondham Town Council leases the land to South Norfolk Council, according to the minutes. Two committee members who also sit on the town council declared that interest and said they heard the application with an open mind.
What comes next: a second 3G pitch
Phase two is a new full-size, 11-a-side artificial grass pitch for football and rugby, plus an extension to the car park. It would be delivered with the Football Foundation and Norfolk FA, according to South Norfolk Leisure.
It needs its own planning permission. The project page says design work is continuing and an application is expected later in 2026. The council has applied for grants towards phase two from the Football Foundation and the Greater Norwich Growth Board.
The site already has a floodlit 3G pitch and refurbished tennis and netball courts. In its announcement on 30 September, the council said those had brought more use to the site.
