Diss switches its Christmas lights on at the Market Place on Saturday 5 December 2026, 4.30pm to 7pm. That much Diss Town Council has published on its Christmas lights page.

Rather more than that is settled, though the council has not put it on the website yet. Its Events Committee agreed the road closure hours, the food vendors, most of the entertainment and the grotto arrangements at its meeting on 21 July 2026, and the draft minutes are public. Two of this year’s decisions will change the day noticeably: there are no funfair rides, and the whole event is confined to the Market Place.

What the council has published

The town council’s own page is brief and unambiguous: “The date has been set for this year’s Diss Christmas Lights Switch-On: Saturday 5th December 2026, 4.30pm - 7pm, at Diss Market Place!” It is organised by the council’s Events Committee.

What the page does not give is a time for the switch-on moment itself. The committee’s own minutes place it shortly before 6.15pm, because the grotto is scheduled to reopen “after the lights Switch-On from 6.15pm”.

Road closure: noon to 8.30pm

The Events Committee agreed road closure timings of 12pm to 8.30pm on 21 July. The clerk was tasked with obtaining a quotation from Core Highways for barriers and cones and submitting the closure application, which had already been drafted.

This is a change from past practice, and the reason is in the committee’s own debrief on the previous event. The closure has normally started at 7.30am, to stop cars parking in the area, but that meant somebody had to staff it all day to let shopkeepers park and emergency vehicles through. The debrief noted that if the event ran later, the early start needed rethinking “to save on labour times”.

As of 5 September 2026 the order itself had not appeared on Norfolk County Council’s events temporary traffic orders page. Agreed hours are not the same as a granted order, so treat 12pm to 8.30pm as the council’s intention rather than a legal closure until the notice is published.

Santa, and the sleigh problem

The grotto is at Diss Museum, on the Market Place, and runs 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Families still queuing at 5.30pm will be given a ticket slip to come back at 6.15pm, and the grotto then reopens 6.15pm to 7.15pm for ticket-slip holders only. Three elf costumes were being sourced, and the committee was checking stocks of children’s books to use as grotto gifts.

How Santa arrives is not settled. The parade has traditionally brought him in on a fire engine, with the Mayor of Diss travelling alongside, and the committee’s debrief records that the fire engine “needs a lot of money spent on it” and that last year “may be the last time it could be used”. The alternatives on the table were the Rotary sleigh, which is privately owned and whose availability the council was still waiting to hear about in July, or something else entirely. A decorated tractor was floated, with the caveat that the Mayor may not be able to ride on one.

Entertainment: what is booked

From the July minutes, the confirmed performers are:

  • Graeme Syed and My Choir Rocks
  • Churches Together, singing five carols at 5pm
  • The panto cast from The Corn Hall
  • Sound House, a live band, at a fee of £500

The committee also agreed to offer Carla Balls a 20-minute solo slot at approximately 5.35pm, and suggested her students could lead Santa’s sleigh procession on foot.

Park Radio has quoted for staging, lighting and sound, including a compere and a Lost Children’s Point, with comparison quotes to be considered. Last year’s staging drew complaints inside the committee about sound quality, speaker height and performers being poorly lit.

Food, bar and stalls

Six food vendors have been approved: Em-Mazing Dinky Donuts, Harris Hogroast, Tikka Tonic, the Pig Pantry, Bucketlist Chips and Elsie’s Pizza. Glow Lights and Balloons has been sent an application form for a walkabout stall.

The bar is not decided. The committee set a pitch fee of £120 plus 5 per cent of the day’s profits and issued a revised tender to two interested vendors, with a submission deadline of the end of August and selection at the September committee meeting. That meeting is on Tuesday 15 September 2026.

Expect trailer and vehicle stalls rather than gazebos. The committee’s debrief notes that after years of December weather, “nearly all stalls that attended were trailer or vehicle stalls which seemed to stay more grounded in the winds than gazebos”, and that stall numbers on the Market Place are capped by how full the space gets.

Two changes to expect

No funfair rides. The committee “confirmed there will be no funfair rides this year”, and the fairground operator who normally sets up at Meres Mouth has been told not to attend, because the 2026 event is “centered on the Market Place only”. If you went for the rides, that is the thing to know.

A tree on a roof, possibly. Members discussed putting a Christmas tree on the flat roof of No.8 Market Place, subject to somebody assessing whether the roof can take the weight. The fallbacks are smaller trees in No.8’s three flag holders, or another spot on the Market Place. Nothing is decided.

Parking

South Norfolk Council runs eight car parks in Diss. Charges apply 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and the first hour is free everywhere, so for a 4.30pm arrival on a Saturday you are paying for at most an hour and a half, and after 6pm it is free.

Mount Street, at 65 spaces with three disabled bays, is the short stay car park closest to the Market Place: free for an hour, £1 for two, £2 for three, £5 for four, four hours maximum. Church Street long stay is much smaller at 11 spaces and bans parking on Fridays. Park Road, Shelfanger Road and Heritage Triangle are the other long stay options, and Chapel Street upper and lower and Weavers Court are short stay.

The road closure will take the Market Place itself out of use from noon, so aim for a car park on the edge and walk in. Also in Diss this autumn

Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2026. Diss Town Council has confirmed the parade will go along Mere Street, followed by a wreath-laying on the Market Place and a service at St Mary’s Church. The commemoration is run by a committee led by the town council with the Diss and District Royal British Legion, the Salvation Army, St Mary’s Church, RAFA, the army and air cadets, Diss High School and 1st Diss Scouts. Timings have not been published: the council says “further details about timings and arrangements for this year’s Remembrance Parade and Service will be shared soon”.
